So, it’s the end of the month/ beginning of a new month, time for me to do a quick rundown of everything else that I watched or read or saw.
1. October 2nd, 2022: The Purge: Anarchy
Honestly, I watched this as background noise. I genuinely have no idea what happened, except people died and then more people died and then somehow a revolution happened? How… Boring and unimaginative of them. I thought that was what happened in the first film. Why are we doing this again, remind me?
Also, spoiler alert and all, but does no one else find it weird that the moment the Purge is over, the government workers just stop? Like, if that were me, I definitely would just shoot and kill the guy, simply because the government is corrupt and would probably thank me for getting rid of a thorn in their side. Are they going to care that I shot the dude a second after the Purge ended? Odds are they probably won’t. So… What?
2. October 5th, 2022: The Blindside
I liked this one. I thought it was sweet, until I did some more research into the film and it turned out that the main character wasn’t actually as intellectually slow the way they portrayed him to be? That’s just, frankly, insulting.
Also, Sandra Bullock is so hot. I mean, I knew she was hot in Ocean’s 8 (which is the most lesbian film I have ever seen without a single explicit gay character), but I was also more focused on Cate Blanchett’s suits to really notice anything else about the film. Plot? Don’t remember. Character? Lou can step on me, and Lou and Debbie should have sex onscreen ASAP. Aesthetics? Cate Blanchett in those suits. Were there even jewels in the movie?
But in The Blindside? The scene where Bullock’s telling a guy off for being mean to her character’s son? Would die and kill for her. Thank you, next.
3. October 7th, 2022: East Palace, West Palace, or 《东宫西宫》
So, this is the first mainland Chinese film with explicit homosexuality, and obviously, you know, first isn’t always best. It discusses homosexuality from the perspective of a police officer who later accepts his homosexuality and a gay person he catches in the park, and it’s definitely more experimental in form than traditional storytelling, with many of the escapades of the main character being shot in an art-housy, confusing type way.
I can’t say I loved it without lying through my crooked teeth, but I will say that I admire the fact that it even got made. This is such an important piece of queer film history in China, so I think I’ll give it a pass on whether or not I agreed with the “sad gay boy” trope and the “suppressed gay male” trope going on here.
4. October 10th, 2022: Shrek and Shrek the Musical
OK, before anyone gets mad at me for never having seen Shrek before, let me just say that… I wasn’t interested? There you go. I saw the adult version of Shrek (Shape of Water, anyone?), and that was good enough for me. Unfortunately, our school is doing the musical Shrek, so I have to watch it. Oh well.
It wasn’t terrible. Was it mind-blowing? No. Was it life changing? No. Did I sob my eyes out when the dragon fell in love with Donkey? No. Stop it, you’re crying.
Just kidding. I did like Dragon, though. I’m glad she’s so cool in the musical.
5. October 13th, 2022: Hotel Del Luna
This show is really, really long, so I haven’t finished it. From what I have seen, though, it’s a really interesting premise, and I think the acting is done really well. I know about IU (I actually really like a few of her songs, but I haven’t listened to enough of her discography to have a definite opinion on her as a singer), but I didn’t expect her to be such a good actor, so that was definitely a bonus for me here.
Also, the clothing here? So cool. The whole idea about the Fates and gods and stuff? Also really cool. This is like, perfect breeding ground for fan-fiction.
Would I recommend it, though? It’s a huge time commitment, that’s for sure. And I feel like the story drags on for a bit, so I’m not sure. If you’re really bored and have nothing else better to do with your time, why not. Go ahead, give it a try, and who knows, you might fall in love with K-dramas.
6. October 18th, 2022: The School for Good and Evil
Side note: hey, it’s that girl from Beetlejuice the Musical!
‘Kay, so you might notice a running theme here, but the only thing I remember from this film (besides it being Paul Feig’s, because I love him and his three piece suits and Bridesmaids), is Lady Lesso portrayed by Charlize Theron. Lady Lesso with her iron-like nails and her poofy red hair and her highly camp little bow when she says, “Showtime”? Jesus.
I don’t remember much else about this film. Obviously, I nearly peed myself when Cate Blanchett’s voice showed up in the form of a pen (because girlie here was probably in Australia or something tending to her pigs instead of being in a lesbian couple with Lady Lesso), but plot-wise? Naught.
I think the story had a cool premise. You know, school for good, school for evil, and they find out that good has become super superficial and bad has simply become weak. That sounds interesting. As it is, however, I think the most interesting part about this film is Michelle Yeoh going, “You think I want to teach beauty class?” Also, did I mention this film has the holy quartet of MILFs? Michelle Yeoh, Charlize Theron, Cate Blanchett, and Kerry Washington? I swooned.
7. October 30th, 2022: To the Bone
This is probably the only film I saw this month that I haven’t dedicated an entire actual review to that was actually good. I love Lily Collins and I think that was Cassie’s mom from Euphoria in here, and obviously Keanu Reeves is brilliant, but I think the reason why I like this film is because of this one line:
An eating disorder is like an addiction.
Wow. Just… Wow. That is such a perfect way to put this disorder. I’ve never had an ED, nor have I ever really had huge body issues, but I understand the feeling of wanting to be a certain way, to look a certain way, and this description encapsulates that perfectly. Because with an addiction, oftentimes, you know you have a problem. The thing is, it’s just easier to go along with the problem because it feels good.
That one line made the entire film go to another level in my book. (Although that feeding scene was seriously uncomfortable.)
8. October 31st, 2022: 365 Days
It’s a good thing I watched this on Halloween, because boy is this a scary movie.
Honestly, I don’t know how this has three films, and I am not watching either of the other two. I only watched this one because I saw a scathing review and I was all like, “It can’t be that bad?” It was. It was that bad. Believe all of the things you see online for this one, because it was truly that bad.
And on that unsavory note, happy November, everyone! (Fingers crossed I get into my Early Decision school and avoid the bloodbath that is Regular Decision. May we all get into our ED schools.)
Happy Tuesday!!
