In honor of Jason Sudeikis hosting SNL soon, I decided to watch season 1 of Ted Lasso today.

The thing that hit the hardest with Ted Lasso was the way that the protagonist Ted Lasso won everyone over with his kindness. It is TV shows and movies like this that reminds the general public that you don’t always have to be smart and witty to have friends and to succeed in life. Sometimes, mere kindness is enough and Ted is a perfect example.

OK, so, first of all: character. Now the most important character of the show is obviously the titular character, Ted Lasso, and his character arc was basically going from not knowing anything about soccer to being able to incorporate some of his own techniques from his own football background into the soccer team. He went from clinging to his marriage, believing that he had to make everything work, to letting himself and his wife to move on.

Rebecca was another highlight for me. Although she didn’t originally think this way, at the end she was able to realize that what she was doing was irresponsible to not just to herself but also to the people who are part of the club, who saw soccer as life. Like Danny kept saying: “football is life,” and she came to realize that was what it was to the people she would be hurting by sabotaging Ted Lasso. She wasn’t just a stone cold boss; she was a person with feelings, a woman going a hard divorce and a disgusting ex-husband, and I love the way the show shows these layers of her slowly, like peeling an onion.

I also love the characterization of Jamie, how even though we do see him change and we do understand why he is the way he is by the scene with his father at the end, we also don’t really like him still. I mean, even when he was at the hair salon and no longer playing for Ted Lasso, he was still self-absorbed and arrogant. That marks good writing; the writers have managed to create a character that you can understand and are multifaceted but still dislike them because they’re not nice people.

Plot-wise, this TV show is such a wonderful experience to watch. Ted Lasso as a character makes you want to keep watching to see how he proved everyone wrong. I really loved that almost everyone’s storyline was complete and complex. Like Juno Temple’s character for instance, seemed a side character originally, just one of the girlfriends, but she turns out to be this amazing person who is kind and considerate and generous and forgiving. It was a comedy but there were parts of it that felt extremely dramatic and there were parts that made you wanna cry, there were parts that made you wanna laugh. Either way you just wanted to be there for the entire ride with Ted Lasso. The story isn’t really innovative or really all that unique, but it has a “make you feel good” vibe to it, and makes you want to keep watching, just to feel happy inside.
从故事情节上看，这部电视节目给人带来了非常美妙的观看体验。泰德·拉索作为一个角色的魅力就在于他会让你想继续看他如何证明每个人都错了。还有，几乎每个人的故事情节都是完整而复杂的。比如Keely这个角色，一开始看起来可能只是个配角，只是某个人的女朋友，结果却是一个善良体贴大方宽容的了不起的人。这是一部喜剧，但有也有部分让你想哭，有部分让你想笑。无论怎么样，作为观众都会一直想要和泰徳一起走完整个旅程。这个故事并没有很创新也没有很独特，但它有一种让你感觉良好的氛围，让你想继续看，就算是只为了内心感到快乐。
Side note, I’m so happy that Ted Lasso has brought Jason back into mainstream projects. I’ve missed being able to see him. I miss all the members of the 2005 SNL cast, if I’m being honest. I miss them being together.
题外话，我真的好开心《足球教练》帮助Jason再一次走到大众的视野里面，我真的挺想他的。说实话2005届的《周六夜现场》卡司我都好怀念，想念他们在一起的日子。
Finally, the show really seems like a gem that’s hidden by the rest of these dramatic and deep and dark TV shows (I also love those, like Euphoria). It’s nice to be able to see a show where although it does deal with deeper issues, it’s also just happy and it doesn’t try to mask that. We as audience members are happy just to be able to watch all of these characters evolve and change. Ted Lasso teaches us that although being optimistic is great, it’s also OK to allow ourselves to be sad and to be angry sometimes. It’s OK to make mistakes. Basically, I WILL be talking about Ted Lasso for the next month. And, I WILL be trying to become Ted Lasso for the next month. Maybe two. We’ll se if any other characters can inspire me by then. BELIEVE!
