'Fang Si-Qi's First Love Paradise'

Read the book Fang Si-Qi's First Love Paradise today, and cried for a bit haha.

I rarely read Chinese books, not because I have anything against Chinese authors, but because I read English more easily. I would often even buy the English translated version of Chinese books to compensate. But this book was recommended by a friend, and she said it was really good, so I bough the original. I’m glad I did, because so many of the beautiful descriptions and sentences in the book would have been lost in translation.

This book is really both shocking and disarming, and it makes the reader feel powerless as we watch a beautiful young soul become a lost one. At least there was still a ray of sunshine from Yi Wen’s story, or the story would be really very depressing. Unfortunately, even this ray of sunshine isn’t completely happy. I read this comment about this book, and I think summaries the story very well: “{Lolita told this story from the perpetrator’s point of view; Fang Si-Qi's First Love Paradise’s tells it from the victim’s point of view, so we see degradation and misery."

The writing style was slightly less developed, the changes between scenarios was slightly confusing at times, but the plot was heavy, the characters conflicted and realistic, the descriptions beautiful. I think I’ll end this review with a few of my personal favourite quotes.

“When you’re eating marshmallow-like candy and you bite down on a hard walnut chip, it is like a dream being interrupted, like the question that I must force myself to swallow— what is our relationship?”

“I just realised that even Aushwitz can be boring.”

“Some people are like a work of art, you admire the whole first, and then realise that even the waves made by the tips of the oil paintbrushes are beautiful, and you finish looking at it for a lifetime.”

“She only realised later that when people say the wedding ceremony is where a woman is most beautiful, it meant more than just a woman’s beauty inside and out beginning to deteriorate, but also that a woman must automatically conceal all of her sexual attractiveness into her Pandora’s box.”

“Because strawberries have season, and I’ll miss it, but lemon cake is forever there, and I like things that are forever.”

“Dreams are just acting on your daydreams.”

After finishing this book, I just hope that everyone in the world can be happy and safe and healthy, and I hope that stories like Fang Si-Qi’s happen less and less.

Happy Monday.
