'Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' was Fun

So, happy April Fool’s, and besides the overall review of all that I watched in March, here’s also a review for Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

I know about as much about D&D as I know about the mechanics of ice cutting, which is to say, I’ve seen it in a piece of media but besides that know absolutely nothing about it. (Ice-cutting in Frozen, D&D in Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, which is an amazing book and much, much better than the film). So I imagine I walked into this film the same way people who didn’t know much about the Addams Family walked into Wednesday, and I imagine I walked out of it similarly as well– loving it.

The film tells the story of one Bard, played by the ever-serious Chris Pine (did Harry Styles spit on him, we’ll never know), who alongside his partner Holga, a Barbarian (I know nothing about these statuses, but I’m naming them in case you do), were captured and sent to jail for theft. They escape and find out that Chris Pine’s daughter has now been captured and held captive by a bad man played by Hugh Grant, aided by a Wizard named Sofina, played by Daisy Head. The movie tells the story of them getting her back and also saving the world from Sofina and her nefarious plans.

I won’t lie, I literally scrolled down the lists of movies showing and chose this movie solely because of its cast, so I walked in knowing absolutely nothing to expect. But then I actually enjoyed the movie? It was funny for the most part (having a similar tone to The Guardians of the Galaxy at times), and had characters that were both annoying and somehow also very lovable. I loved the CGI and the overall cinematography, especially the lands that Chris Pine and Holga (yes I am referring to Chris Pine’s character as Chris Pine, I don’t care) rode past, were stunning. Absolutely amazing to look at. The overall viewing experience was 10 out of 10.

I can’t say much else about the plot. It was funny, the plots were not predictable, but the overall story isn’t going to be winning any awards for innovation. The best thing about this film I think was the fight scenes at the end, with Sofina using her magic and not being as easily defeated as I had thought she would be. Those scenes were super cool. They were also really beautiful to look at.

The one qualm I have against this film is probably the setting. I don’t understand why the group had to get Chris Pine’s daughter back on the day of the big games (I understand Sofina’s reasoning for that), and I don’t understand why there was a rush for them when there really shouldn’t have been? So that’s the one plot point that I was a bit iffy about. Other than that, four out of five stars, I really enjoyed this film and would watch it again.

Happy Saturday!!
